BIO

Born into a family background of Architecture and Design, Evan’s interest in Photography began with his father’s Pentax SLR at the age of 12. The idea of capturing a single moment in time ignited his imagination and passion for photography from darkroom processing to digital. Then followed by a keen interest in visual communication and screen content with new emerging media saw Evan explore the world of motion graphic design.

Evan’s expression is derived from incorporating his interests of exploring cultures, places and people and the natural environment where he currently develops diverse cultural and landscape stills.

ABOUT THE ARTISTRY

Evan’s work reflects escapism and illusion with a timeless and often a continual fascinating quality. His expression offers a style of documentation meets fine art by referencing classic and timeless portrayals of composition, light and tone. This style is further enhanced in print form with the use of a photographic stock resonate to the results of classic darkroom processing.

Evan’s aim is to draw on his initial feelings and memories of this manual development which allow for the enrichment of deep blacks for contrast yet merge with subtle diffusions and a softening effect of varying grades of mid tones. The result is one that currently allows Evan to explore his tools digitally and reference this type of effect whilst applying minimal adjustments between the shooting and print stages.

Evan also draws upon his skills of timing and accuracy in delivering a message, a trait developed whilst working on motion projects where, at times building the visual components and working the outlay backwards has allowed Evan to imagine and enhance these traits into a style of photographic storytelling across a longer format across fine art. This approach is much more like movie stills and storyboarding where each image itself can also be given its own expression or tone. And given his background in motion design it is natural for him to tell a visual and photographic story in this format.

2019 October - Life Framer 2019/2020. First place winner ‘THE FACE OF THE EARTH’ adjudicated by Nick Brandt Photographer.

Jury’s comment “A photograph of an environmentally denuded world – what must be thousands of skeletal dead trees from an Australian wildfire – that is like an almost abstract but intricate engraving or pencil drawing. It’s almost hard to tell if one is looking at a negative or positive image. An image of death yet also eerily beautiful. To me, this encapsulates the current face of the earth in the 21st century, in the midst of environmental crisis.” – Nick Brandt
